Lean business model and implementation – tips by Casper Ravn-Sørensen

He is an entrepreneur and a business angel investor. He was succeeding in entrepreneurship when we had different rules of an entrepreneurial game.

There were different tactics and on the first sight, one can say it was easier to be an entrepreneur in 2004 when he was starting his own project.

But is it true though?

When he first came to Copenhagen, Casper Ravn-Sørensen was completely broke. It was his girlfriend that used to pay their bills and taxes since he just had an idea of a project which soon became a company called Media Denmark Aps.

Today, he is running successful projects like Cleanskin.dk, Alpha57 and Dotcom-Capital, among others. But how does he do the business now?

Helping young entrepreneurs

That is the answer! Casper Ravn-Sørensen decided that, after being involved in entrepreneurship for such a long period of time, that he will become and angel investor and a mentor for young entrepreneurs.

The best part of being an investor is that you get to mentor great minds. There are so many talented entrepreneurs that have a huge potential. It’s great to talk to so many people that are passionate about their ideas or projects. These people usually know how to scale things with the right network, knowledge and capital. I am very involved when I feel that the entrepreneur really feels its project, has a strong concept and a committed team – this is when my full attention is captured.

Having a perfect business plan

After Casper Ravn-Sørensen, it is simply not enough! If you create a business plan for a long period of time. Let’s say, for 5-10 years, it is more common that your project of a startup will fail. And why is that? The thing is that, you cannot predict anything. You have to create a project that tends to change. And you and your team should be a group of people that are not afraid of changing the course of their idea. Having a business plan and following it for years and years is so old-school. Nowadays, people tend to pay more attention to things that are adaptable, and to projects that fit their needs and desires that can be changeable.

Entrepreneurship is a tough game and pretty much demands your complete focus, but it’s all about passion and pursuing your personal and professional goals. The main motivation when it comes to being an entrepreneur is that you get to structure your own everyday life.

Communicating with customers

Choosing the customers that you are speaking to and concentrating just on them isn’t going to do you any good. Instead, try and see which people are eager to find you. Which problem have you solved and who is going to be the one saying “I need your solution”. It is not about what you have written in the business plan your customer is going to be. Real customers are among real people, on social networks, walking the streets of your hometown. So get out there and tell people about your startup. Ask them what they think. And do not be afraid of their answers!

As an investor I can get frustrated when I invest in people and don’t get the expected outcome. It is simply not enough to have a good idea. You should be willing spend long hours and work hard on order to achieve your goals. But sometimes young people are not committed enough. I experienced many people with great ideas but with no results, for different reasons. My philosophy about startups is: “If the project can grow profitable, get it out and work it on” – even if you make mistakes. Those mistakes will teach you valuable lesson.

Making mistakes is the key to success

The whole point in running a business in 2017 is actually being able to solve a certain problem. That problem can be turned towards something that hasn’t been solved yet (which is utterly hard to find nowadays) or turned towards solving a problem better than anyone else. What you are going to do and decide is completely up to you. But you should be ready to make a lot of mistakes nowadays. Making a business plan for a short period of time is completely understandable and you need to do it to make a certain hypothesis around your project, but you cannot expect that it is hundred percent spot on.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something, said Neil Gaiman.

Using agile development as the main tool for success

Agile development has existed for a long time now, but not everyone used it until now. Well, even now one cannot see many startups that use agile development as something necessary for their work. And why would that be?

Let’s start by explaining the term.

Agile software development encompasses all the iterative methods of creating and evolving a certain project. When you are working with agile software development, you have to be sure that you are continually plan, continually test and continually integrate changes in your program. What would that mean in practice?

It would mean that, at least in the beginning, all the plans you are making should be limited to one week at least. You and your team should thoroughly follow-up the feedback you get from your customers and continually making all the necessary changes in your project. It is only in that way that you are able to push your startup further and be constantly directed towards your customers.

Maybe it sounds like something that takes a lot of your time and some special inhuman abilities. But of you and your team are focused on winning and passionate about your project, bringing out your project is going to be a piece of cake.

Fighting globalization and financial issues

Well, there is nothing to fight with, you should fight for it. Casper Ravn-Sørensen is an angel investor that appreciates internationally oriented startups and individuals. In order for him to help you, make a certain business plan and show that you are full of knowledge and energy. That you and your team are a motivated group of individuals, and that you are the best in your field of work. In that way the success is near and you will be able to make your dreams come true.
