Imagine the following situation: you are the head of a new startup. You have a good team, you have developed your main product, but something is just not working out. What could it be?

Do you communicate with your team?

This may seem obvious, but many poor leaders don’t know how or don’t want to communicate with their team. No communication can be disastrous for your company. You need to be able to listen to your employees and talk to them. You need to exchange ideas. You need to be aware of what the other are working on. If you don’t communicate, your company will fall out of business. Think of your company as of a body – if all organs and limbs don’t communicate with the brain, then you can’t walk, talk, live! It’s the same thing with your company – it will never move forward if all its parts are not in sync.

Do you have clear goals and is your team aware of them?

One of the top sign of poor leadership is not having a vision at all. You are the head of your business and you’re there to give your team a direction. Everyone needs to know your vision, they need to know what are the goals of the company they’re a part of in order to work on those goals. A good leader is there to, well, lead. Bad leadership means, above all, lack of leadership. To illustrate this, think of a car that works perfectly well, but whose driver doesn’t know where he’s going. He might have a great vehicle, but with no directions, it will take him nowhere. Your team will be lost in the same way if they have no vision to develop and have no directions to lead them!

Are you micromanaging everything?

We understand that bosses sometimes tend to micromanage certain parts of their business. And sometimes, micromanaging is not a bad thing. But often times, it can be really annoying for your employees if you want to tell them how to deal with every single detail of their job.This is why micromanaging can be a sign of poor leadership. Imagine how you would feel if somebody was there telling you every single minute of every single day how to do every single task. It’s awful, right? This is why your team can feel tired, dissatisfied and above all, unappreciated. If you know how to do everything by yourself, then you don’t need them. However, you do need other people, so avoid micromanaging if possible.

Are you too authoritative?

Do you accept criticism and are you ready to make some changes? CEOs who are too authoritative don’t have satisfied employees. If your team members are always being told what to do, they will feel like slaves. And no one wants that. Leaders who don’t accept any criticism and who believe they know everything best are just poor leaders. It’s not easy to have the most responsible position at a company, but if you want this job, you need to be prepared for its challenges. Don’t be bossy and don’t take your frustrations out on other people! Everyone needs to accept criticism and be ready to adjust and make changes. If this doesn’t describe you, think again about you’re doing and how people around you feel because of it.
